Debugging AKS Networking Issues: A Systematic Approach (Part 1)
We once spent four hours debugging a production outage in AKS. Pods were throwing connection refused errors to the database. Naturally, we started where most engineers do: inside Kubernetes. We checked logs, restarted deployments, verified Services, inspected network policies—everything looked healthy. But the issue wasn’t in Kubernetes. It was SNAT port exhaustion on the Azure Load Balancer. That moment reinforced a pattern I’ve now seen repeatedly: AKS networking issues rarely start where they show up. The symptoms appear in pods, but the root cause often lives in Azure infrastructure—completely outside Kubernetes’ visibility. Most engineers debug from the bottom up. They exec into pods, run curl, inspect CoreDNS, and dig through configs. That approach is backwards. After years of running AKS in production, I’ve learned a simpler rule: Start at the top, and work your way down. Because in AKS, upstream failures cascade downstream—and if you start in the wrong layer, you’ll spend hours chasing ghosts.

Most Kubernetes guides stop at “the cluster is running.” Production does not. A real production environment is not just AKS in Azure. It is repeatable infrastructure, automated deployments, self healing systems, and clear separation between platform and application concerns. In this guide, you will build a complete AKS platform from zero using Terraform for infrastructure and ArgoCD for GitOps. You will see how to structure environments properly, bootstrap ArgoCD the right way, manage secrets with Azure Key Vault, and run applications using production patterns that scale across teams and environments.
